The purpose of this application is to select Jesuit High School Students who will excel as Aracich Fellows , benefiting themselves while enhancing the learning experiences for other Aracich Fellows.
The type of student who would be best served by our program in Asian Studies is one who is curious, open-minded and academically inclined. They should have a genuine interest in Asian cultures, history and languages, and be motivated to deepen their understanding in these areas. Students who possess strong critical thinking skills, cultural sensitivity and an ability to communicate effectively are also likely to thrive in our program.
This application, therefore, provides a comprehensive and nuanced assessment of a Jesuit High School Student's suitability and readiness to be accepted as an Aracich Fellow. Our assessment takes a holistic approach by considering various aspects of the student's academic achievements, extracurricular involvements, leadership potential, cultural sensitivity, language proficiency and passion for Asian Studies. These indicators, along with personal interviews, essays, and recommendations, provide a more comprehensive understanding of a student's potential to succeed in our program.
Key Evaluation Criteria
We assess the level of interest and enthusiasm you have shown in learning about the cultures of India, Japan, and China. As such, we look for evidence of your genuine curiosity, passion, and dedication to understanding diverse cultures.
We consider your involvement in activities or experiences that showcase your active engagement with different cultures. This can include participation in cultural clubs, attending cultural events, learning foreign languages, or engaging with multicultural communities. However, language proficiency is not a mandatory requirement for the award of a Fellowship.
We look for indicators of your cultural sensitivity and respect for diverse perspectives. This can be demonstrated through your interactions with individuals from different backgrounds, your ability to navigate cultural differences, and your behavior within your school or community.
We look for evidence of your ability to communicate and interact effectively with individuals from different cultural backgrounds. This can include experiences such as participating in language exchange programs, hosting international students, or engaging in intercultural dialogue.
We assess your capacity to adapt to new environments, navigate cultural differences, and embrace diverse ideas. We consider your ability to demonstrate open-mindedness, flexibility, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zones.
We encourage you to share any personal projects or research you have undertaken that demonstrate your engagement with the cultures you wish to explore. This could include independent studies, research papers, or creative projects that delve into the unique aspects of these cultures.
We evaluate your ability to effectively articulate your thoughts and ideas through your application essays and any interviews we have with you or presentations we may ask you to make. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential for engaging with the cultures you will be studying and then sharing your experiences afterward.
We look for students who have demonstrated leadership skills or the potential to positively influence others. This can be through your involvement in extracurricular activities, community service, or positions of responsibility within your school or community.
We look for students who have consistently demonstrated strong academic abilities, particularly in subjects such as history, social studies, foreign languages, or cultural studies. We consider your grades, test scores, and any relevant academic achievements.
We explore whether you have had any opportunities to travel internationally to or spend time in India, Japan, or China. Travel experiences can provide first-hand exposure to different cultures and demonstrate a genuine interest in exploring and understanding diverse societies.
We take note of any awards, recognitions, or publications you have received for your cultural engagement or intercultural initiatives. This can provide additional evidence of your commitment to promoting cross-cultural understanding.
We assess your language skills in relation to the cultures you are interested in studying. Proficiency in languages such as Hindi, Japanese, or Mandarin/Cantonese can indicate a deeper level of engagement and commitment to understanding the cultures and connecting with individuals from those regions. However, language proficiency is not a mandatory requirement for the award of a Fellowship.
We consider recommendations from individuals who have first-hand knowledge of your involvement in multicultural communities. This can include teachers, mentors, or community leaders who can speak to your active participation, cultural sensitivity, and impact in promoting cross-cultural understanding.
